AUGUSTA GROSS
The music by Augusta Gross focuses on internal experiences in a spare, yet incisive way. Her pieces, while contemplative and impressionistic, also display rhythmic inventiveness that incorporate jazz idioms. Her music also reflects classical harmonic influences of such composers like Satie and Debussy.
Part of a family with the combined interest of medicine and piano, for many years she continued the pattern, combining her music career while being a practicing psychologist. A pianist since early age, she returned to the keyboard in 2001 and has been composing ever since. Her pieces can be heard in the CD “Still Sound” featuring pianist Bruce Levingston. Two CDs feature her piano music played by Janice Friedman, entitled “in Close Proximity” and more recently “Beyond Sea Level”. Lately she has written a clarinet and piano piece commissioned for clarinetist Seunghee Lee and will be featured on Lee’s upcoming CD. She is currently working on a commissioned piece for string trio. |
